In this mornings lecture we looked at icon's of the past, we focused in much detail on individuals such as Carmel Snow, Diana Vreeland, Anna Piaggi and many more. However i wanted to write a blog post on Iris Apfel purely because she is my all time favourite!

After listening to todays lecture i learnt that i didn't know much about past fashion icons but i do need to explore them in more depth. The importance of this is because these are the icons who influence the future. I want to familiarise myself with the style of the past which will help me work on telling stories in my future career.

Iris Apfel, not slowing down at 96 years of age, is an eccentric women known for icon piling on of jewellery and thick circular glasses. She has lived a really interesting life, known specifically for her career in interior design- she had colourful and eccentric taste which stood out in her work, described as "classic, but over the top".

What i absolutely love however, is her incredible quick wit and famous quotes. Which was something i really wanted to share on my blog. I think that her quotes really shaped her and made her really special, the way she communicates herself is really important. She really knew how to stand out.

She describes herself as "the worlds oldest living teenager" which i love because it shows her continuing spirt and excitement for life. I think that she's still living life to her fullest, like she always has, and thats an important message to send out.

Her quotes were often really motivational, she showed individuals that you didn't have to have money to be fashionable, it was often the people who had to be creative with their style to stand out. "People with a lot of money don't dress as well as people who have to make do, who have to be inventive". To be this is really inspiring, especially as a uni student with little money, studying a fashion degree. I learn to work with what i have and find knew ways to pair it with accessories and other pieces of clothing.

Iris taught me that you should never be short of anything to say, its the outspoken ones who get far in their careers. You need to have opinions, whether they are good or bad. Learn to disagree, its important to share your thoughts and be honest about what you think and believe in.
