The Power of the Selfie

To begin our new project we have been asked to look at brand campaigns and what story these brands tell in order to market their products. Apple's most recent campaign was rather personal in comparison to others that i have viewed. In our seminar today my group were given 'lens' as an outcome, and as a result we had to look at a recent, interesting piece of lens that we could look at and break down.
We really enjoyed looking at Apples new advertisement- "Selfies on iPhone X", because we felt it was personal and relevant in 2018. The advertisement is really simple yet relatable because it doesn't use all the fancy settings and effects to make the advert amazing- it just uses simple iPhone X selfies. We also noticed that the campaign uses the # which is very relevant to technology and social media right now, because it is interactive to its audience. The # allows individuals to # attaching their own selfies- which could potentially feature in the advert and win a completion for the best selfie. I personally thought this was really personal and nice- even though it has been done before.
One important factor that my group and i thought made the advert really special, was that apple were diverse with their castings using individuals who are younger, older, of different ethnic backgrounds and all absolutely beautiful in their own ways. I thought this made the advert really affective because in the 21st century we have seen a huge rise in equality; apples take on this was brilliant.
With our lecturer, we particularly spoke about the 'power of the selfie' and how the advert was so great because it was discrete and authentic by using something that is already there (the selfie). In recent years our own photographs and selfies are becoming just as important as those that are taken by professionals. Particularly with the technology that is ever changing and growing to be greater and more powerful than ever. This makes it easy for us to create photos like professionals and of great quality off the screen as well as on our phones.
To add an extra layer of depth i took particular notice of the audio that matched up with the images behind the lens. Apple used a comedian voice over which was actually really unexpected but fitting with the images. "Me with my beautiful, colourful personality, im good-looking, clean living and i am modest"- the voice empowered the selfies and despite it being really unusual it worked really well. I tried to imagine the advert with a different audio attached, but i am certain that different sound tracks wouldn't make the advert as powerful as it is.
Overall with a combination of sound, image and relevance to 2018 i think the advert combines each aspect extremely well. It was simply created yet more powerful due to this factor.
