Something that I recently discovered was that there is a company which creates sunglasses from plastic pollution in the ocean. I thought this was perfectly fitting with a current uni project I am focusing on. My project is around the trend story ‘fragmented nautical’ and is all about pushing nautical to the extreme. In some ways I have pushed aside fashion and in the background of my project I have focused on global warming. When looking at an article in ‘the independent’ I discovered that around 10kg of waste is collected to create a pair of sunglasses. The left overs, and what isn’t usable, are recycled. The company that produces these glasses is named Sea2see which is based primarily in Barcelona. Involved in their company are fisherman who help bring in the waste. It turns out that the fisherman are proud of doing this because it pushes aside their bad reputation for leaving fishing nets in the sea and contributing to pollution. Fashion is one of the biggest sections in contributing to pollution, after oil and gas. I think it’s great that this company are giving something back and turning a negative into a positive. With current predictions saying that by 2050 there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish, I think that this is the perfect step forward to help the oceans!
