Since i am studying Vivienne Westwood brand, i thought it would be a great idea to look into her latest catwalk collections for 2018. I looked on BOF to see if i could find any exclusive details to her latest show and i found some interesting details that tied in with my project extremely well. Westwood recent menswear spring 2018 collection focused more on activism rather than the actual clothes themselves. Since Vivienne Westwood is a fierce activist, she focuses more on the political sides of her shows as opposed to the fashion side.
The show was said to have a 'circus' vibe, presenting reruns of her page tribalism collections alongside 'shredded clothes' and 'flintstone chic'. BOF said that the clothes "initially took a backseat" and by this it seems they weren't the main focus of the runway. However the clothes soon became clear to represent her activism for preventing global warming.
The clothes presented flattened plastic bottles which were intended as sandals on the models feet, net stockings with rubbish trapped through them and shirts showing provocative messages. The clothes in my opinion seemed to show the state of the oceans due to non recyclable products- a huge contribution to global warming. The fact that the models had their faces painted like clowns could be a consideration to how people seem to take global warming as a joke- Westwood wants to change this, convincing people that global warming is real and it is killing our earth.
To close up my views on Westwood's catwalk show, I thought of ways in which this could tie in with my trend story "fragmented nautical". I thought that Westwood use of global warming could be used as a nautical extreme. This is just a thought, but i think it could fit really well with my outcome of 'print' as well.
